HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Happy Holidays!

Right about this time of the year, things always seem a bit blurry to me. I must admit I’m looking forward to a few days off, lots of holiday eating and sneaking in as much sewing as possible to finish off gifts that haven’t quite gotten done yet!

Yesterday’s giveaway winner was comment #7, Jean! Her comment was, “Oooo the fabric definitely! My favourite holiday food is nice a juicy roasted goose with super crispy skin. I love the anticipation of it while it’s roasting and how the house slowly begins to fill with the aromas from the roast! Mmmmm I’m hungry now!”

I really want to thank each of you for commenting over the last few days. It’s so lovely to hear from you. I hope you get all the things on your crafty wish lists and have a super holiday!

ROSALYN'S CRAFTY WISH LIST

Rosalyn's Crafty Wish List

I wish I had a metre of Liberty for each of you sweet friends! Yesterday’s winner was comment #26 from Jennifer Ashley who said, “The Mirabelle is gorgeous – I would make a little bonnet and perhaps a tooth fairy pillow from the remnants for my Granddaughter Isabella.” A Liberty bonnet?!! I hope I get to see a photo when its done.

Last, but never least is Rosalyn‘s Crafty Wish List…

  • The tiny floral print from the new French General ‘Rouenneries‘ collection colour 14 because there’s only a little bit left and it’s super cuteeeeeee. A lil’ nostalgic, it reminded me of  cabbage patch clothing my mom made me, right when I saw it!
  • A long Omnigrid ruler because 6″ x 12″ isn’t long enough. I can also use it for the quilt I need to work on
  • the 2nd tiniest pompom makers (35mm x 45mm) because I want to make tails for stuffed animal bums

For today’s giveaway, you get to choose what you’d like from Rosalyn’s list! A metre of French General fabric? An Omnigrid ruler you don’t have? A Clover tool that’s missing from your sewing kit? If I have it in stock, you can have it. Today, just let me know what you’d choose off the list and then tell me what your favourite holiday food is. For me the food is one of the best parts of the holidays, it’s the best excuse to eat things like baked brie. (which is my favourite holiday food) Since I have so much more crafting to do, I’m trying to focus on the delicious rewards to come rather than stressing out.

Leave a comment today (answering the questions from above) before midnight and I’ll announce the final winner tomorrow.

STYLISH DRESS BOOK 2 : DRESS 'V', TUNIC VERSION

Stylish Dress Book 'V', Tunic Version

I’d been planning to remake Dress ‘V’, from Stylish Dress Book 2 as a shorter tunic for some time. My first version was my shibori dress, which is a very summer-inspired dress. This black and white tunic reminds me of snowy winter.

The main fabric is by Anna Griffin and shows a delicately stippled print. I love how different the print reads from close up and from far away. The contrasting black placket fabric is from the My Folklore collection, which I have used over and over and over again in my projects. The fabric covered buttons are made from the same black My Folklore fabric. I actually find it incredibly hard to pair two different printed fabrics together. I like things to be quite ‘plain’, but I have been working to challenge myself to overcome this. Doing patchwork has definitely helped me to accept (& love!) seeing two prints side by side.

p.s. I really love the sleeve on this dress – perfect length and amount of gathering around the cuff.

p.s.s. I’ve been updating My Crafty List of Things to Do, as I daydream about all the things I wish I had time to make right now!

p.s.s.s. I’ve got FOUR giveaways planned before Christmas, starting tomorrow!

FABRIC FISH

Fabric Fish

Last year I got Andrew’s dad & grandfather some fishing lure for Christmas. These jigheads have a super sharp hook, so I thought it would be cute to sew up little fabric fish from scraps and safely hook these little guys into them before wrapping them up. It was something I did at the very last minute, but I think it looks so cute!

For some other ideas, I thought I would just point you in the direction of my holiday posts from last year, since I can’t really share this year’s ideas just yet.

A couple people have mentioned to me that they’ve made some of the French Chocolate Granola for gifts. I personally think food gifts are awesome.

ROAD TO CALIFORNIA

Road to California

I just read this morning that there are 12 days until Christmas. This is right after I had convinced myself that I had lots of time left to get stuff done. But let’s not talk about that today. Today, I just want to post something non-holiday related that I made.

It’s a new quilt block for my Brown/Orange/Grey sampler quilt called, “Road to California”. I spotted it online here and thought it looked easy enough to give it a go. It was!

I have to admit that making a sampler is completely relaxing. I just need to do one block at a time. I love it.

I’ll be back again this week for a holiday giveaway. I’m hoping to somehow check about 50,000 things off my to-do list today.

FRENCH CHOCOLATE GRANOLA

French Chocolate Granola

FRENCH CHOCOLATE GRANOLA
recipe by Orangette

I’ve been meaning to tell you about this for ages. Every time I make a batch of this granola, I’ll take some photos and then get distracted by some other crafty thing to post about. Enough is enough, let’s talk about granola.

I actually used to think that it was silly to make your own granola. I thought it took too long, cost too much and why make it when you can buy perfectly good granola. This is coming from someone would make pretty much rather make absolutely everything in life myself, if possible. Well, I was very wrong. Making your own granola is the best, especially this one.

The recipe comes from my favourite food blog, Orangette. When I read the name, I imagined it to be my kind of breakfast. Chocolate for breakfast sounds like a great idea. It’s also the easiest thing to make. The wonderful thing about granola is that you can’t really go wrong, if there’s something you want to add to the recipe (dried cranberries, wheat germ, etc) just throw it in.

This recipe is pretty perfect, but I do make a couple tiny changes when I make it. Instead of vegetable oil, I use roasted hazelnut oil. It adds a lovely nutty flavour. I also use demerara sugar and double the amount of coconut. The other thing I usually do when I’m making a batch, is to mix a second batch together with just the dry ingredients and store it until I run out of my current batch. (which happens really quickly) Making that second batch takes no time all and you’ll be quite excited by that when your stash of granola has run out.

I should also take a minute to just gush about Orangette, Molly Wizenberg and her book, “A Homemade Life”. Molly’s blog is so engaging and delightful. Are you reading it? Oh, you should be. She spins lovely tales of her life and memories and then she throws in a recipe that makes you absolutely hungry. I read her book during the summer and again, I meant to tell you all about how much I loved it. Her writing translates so perfectly into book format. I found myself fixing up a little snack or breakfast and enjoying a chapter or two everyday out in the backyard, savouring every single word. I can’t say enough good things about Molly. I just spotted a quick pasta recipe this morning on her blog that I might need to make. Today.

I’m so glad we finally had this talk.
