April 20, 2010 of 365 : wooden cross stitch pendant with variegated thread

I haven’t made any of these cross stitch pendants for a while, but I wore one the other day at the Spring Trunk Show. It reminded me of how cute they are. I love that they are like little blank canvases with endless possibilities. My simple zig zag design was made much cuter by the Valdani variegated pearl cotton thread I used. The pretty scallop of the pendant was designed by Andrew. It looks like a cookie and is by far the most popular design.

There have been much more clever designs made on them by Claire, Anabela, Emily, Katherine, Michelle and perhaps more that I don’t know about. Do you have one? I’d love to see it.

I’ve been thinking about laser cutting some more of these pendants, with a few new designs.

HUNT & GATHER TRUNK SHOW

Here are a couple of my favourite photos from the Hunt & Gather Trunk Show on Sunday. Half the fun is rooting through other people’s stuff, the other half is seeing, chatting with and meeting people in person. (especially ones that you’ve been stalking on the internet for so long)

I made a few of my wooden cross stitch pendants for the show and some of you bought them! I’m really curious to see what you stitch into them. Perhaps you’ll send me some photos when you’re done?

I was also able to uphold my Trunk Show bunny tradition, but I’ll save the introduction for another post.

CROSS STITCH PENDANT

Sorry about the teaser the other day, I was just so excited that I had to share a wee bit. Here are the beginnings of my idea. I’ve been wanting to cross stitch into wood for a while, of course the thought of drilling hundreds of tiny holes (in a perfect grid formation) into wood does not appeal to anyone. Luckily, the workroom possesses a magical machine called a laser cutter. (That statement alone deserves its’ own post)

After a little computer fiddling, I came up with a few very simplistic designs. I hope to refine them much more. These wooden cross stitch pendants are tiny little canvases that you can stitch little designs or monograms into. How fun! I’m just learning about cross stitch patterns, so my first one is just a simple heart. If you look closely, you’ll see it’s not symmetrical.

In my cross stitch research, I came across the site, Radical Cross Stitch which is full of fun, modern cross stitching. I especially love the Banksy cross stitch. Hmm, embroidered graffiti…

Also, the Antique Pattern Library is a huge (free!) online resource for vintage needlework patterns, including knitting, crochet and embroidery. There are hours of fun there.

Of course, now my mind is racing with a thousand ideas and it’s keeping me up late at night!
