I’m WAY behind on posting my 365 pictures. I’m still taking a photo a day, but have created a scary backlog of photos. I finally spent the day organizing things on my computer, sorting through a few months worth of photos and getting up to date.

August seems so far away, now that November is next week! I’m really going to try to make the next few months of photos really great. I feel like I haven’t been trying as hard recently.

Here’s a short list of things to take photos of and techniques to try before the end of the year – laundromat photo, photo of a someone I don’t know, freelensing, animal photo (not a dog), action shot & more shaped bokeh.

WILD FLOWER GARDEN CROSS STITCH

Wildflower Garden Cross Stitch

Wild Flower Garden Cross Stitch
by Kazuko Aoki
ISBN 9784579109173
available at the workroom

I am obsessing over cross stitch right now. It’s something I’ve always been really interested in, but haven’t officially learned. I’m working on changing that! I’ve ordered a line of Japanese embroidery floss called Cosmo (over 400 colours!) for the workroom and once that arrives we’ll be launching an Intro to Cross Stitch class. Yay!!

In the meantime, I’m doing lots of ‘research’ and pre-planning for future projects. When I came across this book, I ordered it right away for the shop. (and grabbed a copy for myself!) It is filled with page after page of gorgeous cross stitch flower designs and projects. I am imagining cross stitching these happy floral designs during the cold winter and feeling cheered up by creating a stitched garden scene.

Speaking of cross stitch and general cute-ness… I wanted to let you know about Amanda & Ashleigh’s new shop for cross stitch and quilt-y patterns. The shop is called ‘The Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery‘. The shop just launched and I am really excited to make these patterns. Cross stitched candy corn in halloween costumes?!! TOO cute. Their holiday patterns are coming soon and I can’t wait to see what they are.

DRAWSTRING CAMERA POUCH

Drawstring Camera Pouch

This particular project is LONG overdue. I’ve been carrying my camera around in a ratty shoe bag for way to long. I was really inspired by this amazing knitting bag that Amanda made. It made me realize that my camera bag could be a simple drawstring pouch.

After making my Far Far Away II Birdie Sling, I was totally psyched to make my camera pouch out of the same collection. I’ve never made a lined drawstring pouch before, so I worked out a little mock up in muslin fabric and figured out the perfect way to make it all come together.

I used the blue Owl and the Pussy Cat fabric for the outside with some scraps of the grey Roses for the contrast top. I quilted circles with orange thread around the suns with batting underneath the fabric to add a little padding. I love how this looks! For the inside of the bag, I used the orange Man in the Moon print and did some more circle quilting around the moons. I put another layer of batting beneath the lining fabric too.

The drawstrings are actually a grey shoelace that Andrew had that he never used. My favourite detail is the little hexagon tabs I added to the end of the drawstring. eek! Too cute.

I’m so excited by how this turned out! I love it so much and can’t believe I waited so long to make this for my camera. I can finally check this off ‘My List of Crafty Things to Do‘!

p.s. i wanted to show my camera with the bag, but couldn’t since I was using it to take the photos!!

FAR FAR AWAY II BIRDIE SLING

Far Far Away II Birdie Sling

I’ve been using my sewing machine again and it feels so good. We were on a little break from each other, but I’m suddenly feeling really inspired to get going on some projects.

I was waiting for the Heather Ross Far Far Away II fabric to arrive so that I could make myself a new Birdie Sling bag. I knew it would make the perfect new fall bag. This is the fifth Birdie Sling (1, 2, & 4) that I’ve sewn, so when I make it now, there’s a nice rhythm and familiarity with the pattern that is so satisfying. Mind you, some of you eager sewers out there have made this bag twelve to thirty times! (Dawn, Kelly, Kristen!)

This is still by far, my favourite bag pattern. I used two Far Far Away fabrics for the outside, the grey roses for the body and the grey Sleeping Beauty for the handles and bands. For the lining and pockets, I used a vintage orange floral fabric that I bought in Brimfield. The Far Far Away fabric is a linen/cotton blend and it awesome to sew with. Plus, it’s crazy cute. Also, this colour palette of grey + orange + bits of blue feels perfect for fall.

As soon as I had finished this bag, I started to work on another project using Far Far Away. This fabric gets me so excited! I’m going to finish that up today and try to post it tomorrow. I’m pretty proud of it, since I made up my own pattern and it totally turned out. Love when that happens.

PURPLE T-SHIRT

Purple T-Shirt

I’ve been wanting to perfect a pattern for a simple, loose t-shirt. Similar to the one tie-dyed logwood t-shirt that I made in the summer, but a bit more refined.

I found a couple metres of this purple jersey in one of my boxes of fabric. Score! I have a really fancy jersey fabric that I don’t want to mess up, so I’m happy that I tried this purple version as a prototype. I’m going to make a few small changes to my pattern – drop the underarm to make the sleeve deeper and more ‘flow-y’ and make the neck less wide and slightly higher so that it doesn’t fall off my shoulders.

I love the finished neck band. It is one of my favourite tricks from the T-Shirt class. Plus, since this is sewn on a serger, it comes together so quickly. I made the pattern, cut it out and serged it together in a few hours. I hemmed the sleeves and bottom using our coverstitch machine. So professional.

If my next version turns out just right, I’m making a bunch! This tee + jeans = my fall uniform.

AMISH BARS QUILT

Karyn's Amish Bars Quilt

I had pretty much finished most of this quilt during our summer Amish Bars class, but that last bit of hand sewing on the binding never quite got finished. That binding was 75% done for the last couple months! I finally finished it in front of the television over the weekend. Yes!

The quilt is machine quilted. Rather than ‘stitch in the ditch’ quilting, I often prefer to do ‘echo’ quilting where I follow the seams, but the stitching runs parallel to them. In this case, I like how it emphasizes the bars of the quilt. I love this simple patchwork design! The back of the quilt is a done with a Moda woven plaid, which is so soft.

I hand embroidered a little label (using variegated thread) and finished that on Sunday. Once the label was done and sewn on, I put the quilt in the washer and dryer. For me taking a finished quilt out of the dryer and seeing the puckery fabric is the final step of quilt making. Some people dread washing their quilts, but I find it so satisfying.

This quilt is a baby gift for my friends Liz and Ben who had their second son, Judah, about six months ago. I’m really excited to finally be able to pack it up and send it off to them in Austin, TX.

I’m collecting ideas for my next quilt, a whole cloth quilt, so it feels pretty awesome to add this quilt to the ‘FINISHED’ list.

the workroom WISH LIST

Happy Monday! Firstly, I have to thank you for all your lovely comments on my 3 Year Anniversary post. I was so touched to read your thoughts and memories. I can promise you there lots more exciting things to come to the workroom over the NEXT three years (and more!) and the reason we do it, is for you. I drew two random numbers this morning for the $50 class gift card prizes and the winners are #36 – Pam B and #29 Loren K!!

Next, I wanted to tell you about something new we’re starting at the workroom. A crafty gift registry! Most of you will be spending the next few months thoughtfully hand making gifts for the people you love. Make it easy for your friends and family to buy you the perfect thing by filling out one of our Wish List cards. We will keep your card on file and assist anyone looking to buy you something from the shop. We will also cross off items that have been purchased for you to avoid double gifts. Feel free to take a few extra cards, if you’d like to hand some out directly or casually post one on your fridge door. (hint hint!) The registry is not just for the holidays, this is a year-round registry – birthdays, weddings, Valentine’s Day, National S’mores Day, etc. Purchases from your Wish List can be made over the phone to make it even more convenient.

the workroom Wish List was created from your suggestions and comments. It’s a great idea, so thank you for asking for it! We think you’ll have a lot of fun filling out some dream gifts from the shop.

These beautiful Wish List cards have a pretty scalloped edge and were designed by the super talented Andrew. (who designs everything workroom-related!)

3 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

the workroom... in the beginning

This week marks the three year anniversary for the workroom!! I can’t believe how time flies. I thought I’d share some photos from when I first got the keys to 1340 Queen Street West. How strange to see the space so empty, when now it is so full! The entire space got a painting makeover, as you can see. Somehow, I just couldn’t live with the navy blue ceiling or burgandy store front!

I honestly can’t imagine doing anything else and I feel really lucky to be a part of your lives. Thank you for making the workroom more vibrant than I could have ever imagined it to be!

Tuesday night we had our annual anniversary party at the shop. What fun to see so many of you come out to celebrate! I gave away some prizes that night, including a lovely prize from Soak. Thank you, Jacqueline for the awesome donation.

For those of you who were not able to attend, I wanted to do a giveaway here on the blog. I’ve got two $50 class gift cards to raffle off!! To enter, simply leave a comment on this post sharing a memory you might have of the workroom…. the first time you discovered us, your first class, your favourite thing you made/purchased here… The contest will close Sunday October 17, midnight (EST). This giveaway is for anyone in the Toronto area who would be able to attend a class at the workroom, the gift cards will have no cash value. Anyone who won a prize at the party on Tuesday, is not eligible to win again. (just to be fair!) I will draw two names randomly on Monday and announce the winners.

Thank you for the craftiest three years ever! xoxo

NEW YORK CITY

Soho

It has been exactly a month since I took a little weekend trip to NYC with my friend Marie Beath, so it’s about time that I actually got around to organizing and posting these photos!

We rented an apartment in Gramercy for our stay and it worked out perfectly. The location seemed to suit us and the bonus was that we were located a few blocks away from the Shake Shack. The Shake Shack is new to me, but is a outdoor burger joint in Madison Square Park. Known for their awesome food, they are also well known for their incredibly long line ups. You can check their website’s shack cam to check out how long the line up is in advance of heading over. Luckily since we were so close, we were able to sneak over at odd times to get our fix. Cheese fries & vanilla shake!

Quite a bit of our trip centred around food and eating all sugary things that crossed our path. I am in love with New York food trucks. They are absolutely not like anything we have here in Toronto. I’m talking about organic ice cream and coffee (Van Leeuwen), dumplings (Rickshaw), natural slush (Kelvin), and tacos (Endless Summer). There are lots more. I’d love to do a tour, just sampling all this delicious truck food.

When we weren’t eating, we actually covered lots of ground, Central Park to Soho, Chelsea to West Village to Nolita and even a day in Williamsburg. Here are a few of my favourite highlights….

  • Ace Hotel : Our trip started and ended here, actually. Stump Town coffee, breakfast at The Breslin and buying Japanese socks at the Opening Ceremony shop.
  • Momofuko Milk Bar : A slice of grasshopper pie and birthday cake ‘truffles’.
  • Grand Central Terminal : One of my favourite buildings in New York. I just love the restored constellation ceiling.
  • Eataly : Italian food emporium. This was our Friday night excitement. Seriously.
  • Green Market in Union Square
  • The Highline
  • Art Galleries in Chelsea : My favourite street for gallery hopping is West 24th Street between 10th & 11th Avenues. This is where the Gagosian, Mary Boone, Marianne Boesky and Luhring Augustine galleries are located.
  • Magnolia Bakery : We walked by at a moment when there was no line!
  • Purl Soho : I got to go check out their new larger location and browse all their lovely goods
  • Coclico : One of my favourite shoe shops. I lucked out with an awesome pair of grey wedge shooties
  • Cafe Gitane : Side walk table, watermelon juice, goat cheese with pomegranate molasses and bread + couscous = heaven.
  • Juliette in Williamsburg : Met up with Canadian gal pals, Natalie & Jen, for delicious brunch in their garden room.
  • Mast Brothers Chocolate in Williamsburg : American craft chocolate. I didn’t realize, but they do tours of their factory on the weekend. This is on my list for next time!
  • The Strand : I don’t know how many hours I have spent wandering the aisles of this incredible book store.
  • Don Hills : Dancing at an open bar fashion week party until the wee hours of the morning. Surprise (to me) concert by Crystal Castles. Fun!

I’ve posted all my photos from the weekend here, including my daily photos of Marie Beath with her soy latte. Can’t wait for the next girls weekend!

Happy Thanksgiving!
