How it’s going vs. How it started.

It’s officially one year since I got the keys to the General Store! So much has happened in one year and I already can’t imagine @_theworkroom not being in this amazing space filled with so much history. It truly feels like home.

@_theworkroom started as a dream I had seventeen years ago in Parkdale. If you told me then that we would somehow end up in Sprucedale, I never would have believed you!

It’s been a rollercoaster few years but I’m still hanging on. Thank you for following along as I keep dreaming new dreams for us. ✨

Deep Breath. This is a big one.

I’m going to start with immense gratitude to everyone in our community. We’ve done so many great things together this past year! We moved twice and set up two very special locations - in Parkdale and Sprucedale. We have hosted over 220 workshops, and many special events like our annual Heart Crafted Maker’s Market, Member Stitch nights and a community fabric swap. Our hearts are full from all the wonderful connections made.

The difficult thing is that even with everything we have accomplished, class registrations have been down significantly for a while now. Unfortunately, the numbers don’t add up to keep a physical space in Toronto anymore, even with all the changes we made in hopes to find a solution for this. I’m so heartbroken to say we will have to close our Parkdale location later this Fall.

Please know that closing this chapter of @_theworkroom , makes space for us to recover and move forward into the future. We are full of ideas and will be shifting our energy to all the potential here in Sprucedale and in our existing online community, theworkroomstudio.ca - where we will start to offer virtual workshops and more events for our larger community. We will continue to work with and support our instructors, @jmaskoquilts , @carolannegraham and @_dollypocket in new ways with your help.

We’ll keep our Parkdale studio open for workshops and events until the end of October. If there’s a class you’re interested in, let us know—we’d love to see you there! Check out our current calendar and join us for a final workshop at Cowan Avenue. Now is the time!

Our September Handmade Getaway in Sprucedale is already half full, and we’re planning more retreats and a Fall Maker’s Market to celebrate our 17th anniversary. We are so lucky to have this permanent home in the Almaguin Highlands.

Thank you for your continued support as we move forward and stay tuned for more updates. Our weekly newsletter is always the best place to get our updates first and unedited. Feel free to reach out with any questions—we’re always here for you.

I’m so pleased with how this @merchantandmills F

I’m so pleased with how this @merchantandmills Florence top turned out. I’d been eyeing the Pink Soda Dobby cotton and finally scooped up the last 1.1 metre. Luckily I was able to just squeak this pattern onto this smaller piece with careful planning.

I’ve been thinking about bringing back my blog for a few years. I miss having such a clear record of my projects in words and images. I feel rusty, but excited for some long form writing projects I’ve been wanting to get going for a little while.

I’ve been looking forward to the @ravenwoodsfarm

I’ve been looking forward to the @ravenwoodsfarmstead Pizza Box subscription for months and it’s finally started! What a clever way to encourage folks to try different in-season vegetables, greens and herbs from the farm.

The first pizza box delivered this week and it surpassed my expectations! This week’s instalment included fresh dough, herbed ricotta (lemon balm, lemon basil, lemon thyme and garlic chive), radish and radish greens, fresh arugula and chive blossoms. I added mozzarella as suggested. What a wonderfully flavourful combination of ingredients! Radish on pizza?! It was so good!
.
I know how much thought Fern put into figuring out this first week’s menu based on what was ready at the farm. I can’t wait for a whole season of pizza!
