CHERRY BLOSSOMS

Most likely the cherry blossoms in High Park are now done, especially since the weather was so wacky and windy on Saturday. I did make it over to see them last Monday with Maisy. After all these years, it was my first time experiencing this lovely yearly event. It was great to see so many people out, taking photos and picknicking under the trees. I didn’t stay too long since I had yucky accounting to take care of. Next year I will bring a blanket (Note to self: Make picnic blanket), a picnic and a book to celebrate the blossoms and the fact that I have hired a bookkeeping service to take care of my 2009 accounting, so I will never spend another day off indoors rifling through dull paperwork. Yeah!

Unfortunately, I will be spending my day off today trying to finish off my 2008 accounting. Please please please let me finish this horror today.

GOOD-NESS

Goodies from Goodness

This amazing package arrived on Friday from Japan, it was a wonderful surprise on a quiet afternoon. Even the stamps are amazing. Leslie of Good-ness and I had talked about doing a fun swap. Right after that, she announced her move back to Canada. Since she was caught up in the whirlwind of getting ready to move half way around the world, I figured we would put the swap on ‘hold’. I had made a couple requests for some Japanese books I had been lusting over and had also asked for a pair of knee socks. Japan has the best socks. If you ever go, can you bring me back a pair of cute knee socks? These ones are adorable with a little ruffle-y detail along the top and mini yellow flowers all over. They are deserving of a special outfit, which I am currently trying to work out, or perhaps make.

The Come Home shop & cafe book (ISBN 9784391626261) is a guide to incredible little businesses around Japan. Since I hope one of our next trips will be to Japan, it’s never too early to start doing research. These shops are too perfect. I have been pouring over every detail in all the photos. Love love love.

There was also another Come Home book (ISBN 9784391620429), a few Japanese fabrics and two Salvia books. The sweet Salvia books are part of a series and I’d love to collect them all.

Leslie, you’re TOO good. I’ll be sending off your package to Calgary for you this week. Safe trip home!

TULIPS

Tulips

I really love tulips. I especially like it when they start to droop over. This fall I am definitely going to plant some bulbs for next year. Please hold me to it.

VINTAGE EMBROIDERY HOOPS

My wishing powers have come through in spades once again! I’ve really been wanting some vintage embroidery hoops to hang on my wall at home. I was also kicking myself for not picking up the hoops Anabela had at the trunk show, but Celine was quicker than me.

Every once in a while someone will stop by the workroom and give me sewing related things – patterns, fabric, tools that they no longer want. Yesterday a lady dropped off a huge bundle of embroidery hoops, including some awesome metal ones! Happy day. I love it when the universe delivers to my door!

SUNDAY

I know, it’s Wednesday already, but I’m a slow blogger. This is one reason I’m trying out Twitter – to give little updates that are more timely. I’m finding it completely confusing so far, but if you want to follow me you’ll know precisely when the UPS guy delivers new fabrics and other possibly interesting/not interesting tidbits.

Okay, back to Sunday. I wore coloured tights for the first time! (since I was 5) This was a silly personal goal of mine this year, to finally wear a pair of turquoise tights I’ve had for ages. Done.

Then, I had two surprise visitors to the workroom Sunday afternoon. Rosalyn and Michelle bumped into each other near Sanko, picked up some treats and came by the workroom. It was an impromptu sweet treats party!

Michelle also brought along a cute embroidery book for me to look at. I’m posting photos because it’s full of awesome ideas. The book is called Embroidery Animals & Insects (ISBN 9784021904288) I really love the little embroidered felt postage stamps. I need to embroider a quilt label for my double wedding ring quilt and wish it would look like there were adorable hedgehogs crawling around my perfectly formed letters.

INTRODUCING : ANDREW CLOUTIER

There’s a wizard working behind the scenes of the workroom that you likely have not met, but you’ve surely admired his work. Andrew Cloutier is the designer behind all the beautiful graphics and branding of the workroom. He is also the fellow who makes me laugh on a daily basis, cooks me eggs before I go to work on the weekends and watches Gossip Girl with me every week. This introduction is so long overdue!

A quick glance through his impressive portfolio and long list of awards show that while I’m certainly biased in my admiration of his work, I’m not alone. Everything Andrew designs is like music for your eyes. His attention to detail is incredible, every letter is perfectly kerned, every colour is just the right shade and most importantly he understands his client and delivers exactly what they need. I can certainly attest to this. I give very little input besides a bare bones brief of each project. If you know me even a little bit, you will know that all his designs for the workroom perfectly represent me, my style and the concept.

The success Andrew continues to achieve in his career is the result of incredible talent, dedication and understanding of his craft. Amazingly, he keeps getting better in everything he does. You should taste his nachos! Divine.

What is your first creative memory?

Andrew : Art day-camp. I was a terribly uncoordinated child. I showed no interest in any sports at all so my Mother sent me to an arts and crafts day camp. Think: macaroni sculptures, plasticine, and finger painting. I remember laying on my stomach on the floor of the gym at the local church, drawing an airplane.

What is the story behind the workroom’s elegant design?

The Wordmark : I’d been wanting to do a stencil-style logo for a while. This often happens… I’ll have an idea in my mind but no client to sell it to. I had to wait for the right client to come along. Sometimes these things take years. I think it’s perfect for the workroom. I’m glad I kept that one in my back pocket. The font I used for your wordmark was designed by my favourite foundry, Lineto, in Switzerland. Gorgeous.

The Typography : I set the type with an eclectic collection of my favourite typefaces. There are so many things happening at 1340 Queen West. One font just would not do. It ended up looking like a vintage letterhead that would have been set by hand, which is perfect for the space and the business.

The Pale Pink Box : The box is a workspace to write in, just as the workroom is a space where people make things. The pale pink represents you. It’s definitely the colour of you. I think all good graphic design work serves as a biography. I wanted the finished identity to be unmistakably Karyn.

You’ve talked about learning to make a quilt. What interests you about quilting in particular?

Andrew : Quilting is graphic design with fabric. It’s mathematical and grid based, which suits my mind. Dots of ink and pixels of light are the standard media in my business. The thought of fabric as a medium is super fresh. Plus, I like to sew. I like the sound of the machine and the little spotlight on the working area. It’s kind of dramatic. I’ll be making a pixel quilt in 2009. Ladies look out. There’s a new Sheriff in town and he quilts.

Most recent project – personal or professional that you are most proud of.

Andrew : I try to be proud of every single project I create. Unfortunately this isn’t always the case. I have some crazy clients who have crazy demands who aren’t always blessed with good taste. To answer the question, I am most proud of the poster pad triptychs I designed for the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival with Joon Park, one of our talented superstars. The pads were hung all over the city last September. People could peel off a poster to take home, revealing a new one underneath, changing the overall image created by the 3 pads. Awesome client, amazing opportunity, and (I think) a cool idea.

What two random things do most people not know about you?

Andrew : Well I think most people don’t know me, so this question really becomes three interesting facts about me. Ugh I really don’t think I’m all that interesting but here goes.

1. I shave my legs. It’s a bike thing.
2. I was once a Sous Chef but chose graphic design instead.

If you weren’t a graphic designer/design director, what would you be?

Andrew : A chef. I love the sounds and smells of a bustling restaurant and the chaos of a busy kitchen. The pressure and the energy are exciting. Feeding people brings a special kind of satisfaction. I was very good at it. I often dream that I’m still working at the restaurant. I miss it very much. I used to work with a Scottish guy named Iain Duncan, CCC (Certified Chef de Cuisine). After work we used to get quite drunk in our chef’s uniforms and pick fights at the bar, sometimes with each other. He was my boss and one of my favourite people, ever. I remember when I was trying to decide whether to stay in design or go to chef’s school. He told me I could be a great chef, until one day I brought my design portfolio to work to show him. He said “F#ck cooking kid. This sh!t is good.” So here I am.

ETSY MEETING

It was brought to my attention last week, by D’Andrea that some of the etsy team was making a trip to Toronto and Montreal to meet up with Canadian etsy sellers to talk about their future plans for etsy and to get feedback from them in person. They didn’t have a set location for Toronto, so I was more than delighted to offer up the workroom as a meeting point.

Just under fifty people showed up for the meeting Friday night and somehow I had wrangled just about enough chairs and stools for everyone. Chad, Sara and Liz were the enthusiastic etsy representatives who came to meet with us. Not surprising they had some flight delays with Air Canada, but everybody just mingled and introduced themselves as we waited for them to show up.

I’m not an etsy seller, yet. But, it’s something I’ve really been thinking about for a while. (I’ve also been wondering if I should start twittering?) So, the meeting was really interesting for me to hear about some of the features that etsy is focusing on improving such as better search engines (such as being able to search local AND with key words), clearly stating that prices are listed in USD, being able to rearrange the items in your shop, and easy currency conversion.

The attending etsy sellers each introduced themselves by real name and etsy shop name and gave really great feedback. It was fun putting faces to products and when many people introduced themselves there were shout outs of ‘Hey, I love your stuff!’. Things like having the option for local pickup, support for coupons or gift certificates, batch editing of listed items, being able to change your etsy name (especially when you chose the name ages ago without thinking that it might be a future shop name), and better support and tools for the street teams were brought up with group consensus. There were lots of great ideas bounced around for creating applications that would allow bloggers and sellers to promote their favourite etsy items or shops easily. There is a hope that developers will begin to create these tools outside of etsy, similar to facebook or the iphone.

A brief discussion was also held concerning creating a wholesale platform that would assist potential retail buyers to find and interact with etsy sellers. This could potentially help sellers move to the next step with their business of doing bigger volume.

It’s clear that etsy is a huge and dynamic community and it was impressive to meet some of the people from etsy headquarters and to hear how dedicated and excited they are about the future of etsy. I can’t wait to see the changes that come about in the next little while.

Were you at the meeting? Did anything stand out for you? Does anyone else have points about etsy they think need improvement?

I didn’t take good photos at the meeting, but hopefully etsy will post up the video or group photos they shot! {NOTE : the group photo is here!}

Local etsy sellers are having an event at the Gladstone Hotel on Saturday May 16, 11am – 4pm. Drop by the ‘A Spring Handmade Market’ event to shop local etsy in person!

{ADDED NOTE : Minouette posted very detailed notes on the meeting here!}

{ANOTHER ADDED NOTE : Liz from etsy posted her report on the Canadian meet ups here!}
