101 TROUSER : FREEDOM GARDEN

101 Trouser by Merchant & Mills
Freedom Garden Greece double gauze cotton by nani IRO
worn with Camber Set Tee

It’s been ages since I made these pants but the weather got cold right after and I haven’t been able to wear them until now. The choice of print for this pattern is quite the opposite of what I would normally choose, but once in a while I try to surprise myself. I’m starting to think more about pants (not jeans) as something I might wear and this seems like a good start.

The 101 Trouser is a very straightforward pattern and I made one little modification, based on a suggestion from Marnie that I might like a bit more of the ‘paper bag effect’ at the waist, so I added two inches to the height of the waistband piece (to give an overall 1″ extra).

In the double gauze these pants are so light and comfy. I usually use double gauze for tops and dresses, but it works really well with this style.  I’m going to try another version in a linen next to add to my summer wardrobe.

  1. I’ve been waiting to see these on you since I saw your start ages ago. They look wonderful. Are these the tapered trousers rather than the full? I actually have this pattern sitting right beside me right now as I’ve been thinking of making it soon, but which version?

Love it in the double gauze!

    1. Hi Melissa! Yes, this is the tapered version and I quite like them. They are still loose and very comfortable. Hope you make yours soon!

  2. These look like just the perfect trouser for summer. I haven’t seen them until now and I think I may have to check out the pattern.

Sadly, my butt is tricky fitting into patterns as it’s a bit bigger, but I guess that’s what muslins are for!

Love how you use the Nani IRO!

    1. Hi Cris! I can’t say for sure how this pattern will work for you, but they are fairly loose with a very long rise. Hope your muslin is a success!

  3. That fabric is beautiul! I can’t say that this style of pants is one I ould typically be drawn to but it looks great on you and that has me thinking I should be willing to give it a try 🙂

  4. I’ve been waiting to see some of these made up as I’m trying to decide on some trouser patterns (the self drafting is giving me a headache). They do look rather lovely and loose, and the fabric choice works really well. I’m wondering whether they will work in a heavier fabric like a wool to be worn in winter.

  5. Hi Karyn! Just wanted to say “Thank-You” for all of your help this weekend, I am in LOVE with the new Bernina 530 and Serger 610D that I purchased and picked up from you this Saturday! It was a dream coming to your shop and just my luck, you were wearing these lovely pants!! I loved them so much that I bought the Merchant & Mills pattern that very same day. It will be the first project to christen my new machines! Very excited and hope to see you again soon at your lovely store xo

    1. Claudia! I’m so happy you’re enjoying your new Bernina machines. Can’t wait to hear how your first project goes. The 101 Trouser will be the perfect one to start! Hope to see you again soon.

  6. I’ve just made these, and have found that there is a lot of material at the wasteland, so it looks a bit odd when tied. Did you make any changes there?
