CITY OF CRAFT 2010

Pair of figures by The Maple Ridge

All I have to say is, “Thank Goodness For City of Craft!”. In the couple days prior to the show, I was entering a holiday meltdown mood. I was really starting to freak out that I was so unprepared with only a week to go. I have only finished a few of my gifts and none of the major ones.

This year was the first year that I went to City of Craft with the sole purpose of shopping. The last few years, I had done a little workshop and had ten minutes to rush around the floor before heading back to the workroom to teach a class. This year I had about an hour, but I could have stayed for twice as long.

The vendors were really incredible! I had a very hard time making my final selections as I had given myself a set budget for spending. But I was able to pick up some great Christmas gifts and a few special treats for myself.

Congratulations! to Becky and everyone City of Craft-related on a wonderful show. Next year I will allot even more time, so I can spend even more money! If I can’t make all my gifts, it feels great to buy gifts from such talented locals.

Details on the fun goodies I picked up:

Watermelon Pair by The Maple Ridge
- these guys are for me! i could not resist these matching figures, especially since they were holding watermelons. Becky told me that Andrew Zangerle was just about to give up on making these figures before doing City of Craft. Please don’t let that happen, they are too awesome.

Mini Blackboard Necklace by Killside Krafts
- okay, this is also for me. Melodie laser cuts her books and cute accessories at the workroom. These mini blackboard necklaces are perfect for someone who loves anything blackboard.

Pin Cushion by Needlebook
- um, this is also for me. I have a few other items by Claire and you can just feel the love crafted into them.

Ceramic Heart Brooch by Julie Moon
- This is a gift for Andrew’s mom. I could easily purchase one of everything Julie makes.

Glow in the Dark T-Shirt by Hieng Tang
- This is a gift for my brother. He loves t-shirts and monsters and you can’t go wrong with something that also glows in the dark!

Asparagus Brooch by Denture Thief Productions
- Oh dear, this is for me.

Cat Tea Towels by Lines by Davis
- This is another gift for Andrew’s mom. I’ve long admired Davis’ cat pillow, so I was really excited to see a tea towel version.

This really shows you what happens when I go out shopping for gifts… 50% for me and 50% for others. Luckily, I don’t get out much! I’m working away on making the rest of my gifts and will post those photos soon-ish.

TORONTO STAYCATION

365 : 227

The week before last, Andrew and I took some time off work and enjoyed a week staycation here in Toronto. We had decided that rather than travel somewhere, we would relax at home and enjoy the city. We had a great time checking out great new restaurants, many of which are walking distance from our house!

Here are some highlights from our week off:

  • Blue Plate : We went here for both a dinner and a brunch and enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere.
  • Universal Grill : An old favourite that we had forgotten about on Dupont.
  • Zocalo : Awesome new place that opened up at Bloor & Symington. Great food and service.
  • We watched ‘Scott Pilgrim’. Perfect Toronto-centric movie.
  • June Harlow : Very new restaurant at Dupont and Edwin with wonderful food. Their dessert menu includes freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and homemade smores.
  • Bloordale Pantry : We’ve been here multiple times now for their brunch. Delicious.
  • Yasi’s : They sell Kawartha Dairy ice cream and they are half a block from our house. Danger.
  • A visit to see Andrew’s brother, Mike at the organic farm he’s living/working on. We were sent home with a load of amazing produce.

INDIA FLINT WORKSHOP

Fabric Bundles

A couple weeks ago, I had the honour of joining a week long workshop at the Contemporary Textile Studio Co-op with Australian textile artist, India Flint. India is world renowned for the magic she has created with natural dyes and her unique approach to imparting colour and foliage prints to textiles and paper.

Since taking our natural dyeing class last year, I’ve been wanting to do more, (I think about it all the time!) but somehow haven’t gotten around to it. Silly how that happens. The opportunity to spend a whole week playing with plants and fabric with India at the helm was just perfect.

We spent our days learning India’s gentle ways of collecting nature materials from florist or grocer garbage (with permission), going on windfall walks (collecting only what has fallen on the ground and not harvesting), learning about local weeds (plants that are in excess for picking) and looking in our own backyards. Even her mordants are made of milk (soy or cow), found scrap metals, pickle juice and aluminum foil from chocolate bars rather than hard and caustic metals.

India’s approach to dyeing was very freeing. We didn’t use a scale, a thermometer or a ‘recipe’ of any sort. We were encouraged to work on small samples (rather than dyeing 3 metres at once), mostly using silk and wool (protein fibres which take colour much more vibrantly). We lay our plant material directly on the fabric and then wrapped or folded it into tight bundles with elastic and string. We had several dye pots on the go, one with onion skins, one with iron scraps, one with who-knows-what. We would sometimes leave the bundles overnight and arrive in the morning to unwrap our treasures. The imprints we each got were truly remarkable. What a beautiful way to mark fabric.

We used the same process to dye paper that we had hand stitched to create a little book. Each student also spent the week deconstructing a men’s shirt to make a special work apron, which we also dyed and hand stitched our samples to. At the end of the week, we took a group photo wearing our aprons. So cute!

On the last day we gathered up all our favourite samples and took some time to admire each other’s work. It was amazing to see how much of our personalities was present in our dyeing samples. Such diverse results from working with mostly the same materials.

I’ve been reflecting on the experience ever since with much wonder. Thank you, India!

I took tons of photos during the week and I’ve posted them all on flickr here.

YARD SALE TRUNK SHOW PHOTOBOOTH

Photobooth backdrop

It didn’t rain on Sunday! The Yard Sale Trunk Show was so much fun. For the first time we had vendors out in the backyard, which made the show feel more spacious. Kessa brought along a tent, just in case of rain and it fit perfectly on the patio.

The highlight for me was Celine’s outdoor photobooth. I approached Celine a little while ago with the idea and wondered if it might be something she would like to try. Little did I know that she would take the idea and make more marvelous than I could have imagined. Celine worked with Rosalyn to create the sunny yellow backdrop. Now I’m in love with yellow! The night before the show, Celine & Jin arrived with a box of tools and worked to rig up the backdrop, a cute wooden ‘photos’ sign, and string to drop the lights and fabric bunting from. All their hard work totally paid off. For fun props, we used cute cardboard diamonds that Rosalyn made and super sour lemon candies that Celine brought.

All the photos have been posted here on flickr. They are all so wonderful, happy and funny. I have already spent hours looking through them all.

We asked for donations towards Sketch for the photobooth and we raised $155 dollars. the workroom will be matching the amount and sending a cheque for $300 to this great organization. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to have their photo taken and making it such a huge success.

Celine, you are amazing. Thank you for your sunny disposition and hard work. Best. Photobooth. Ever!

YARD SALE TRUNK SHOW

Yard Sale Trunk Show

We’ve been extra busy at the shop getting ready for the Yard Sale Trunk Show this Sunday. We seem to be actually a bit giddy over having some of our favourite people all in one space for this show. Also, the talented Celine Kim will be doing a photobooth that you won’t want to miss. We will be asking for a pwyc donation towards Sketch, an art studio for street youth. The photos will be available to you on flickr after the show. So awesome.

The show will be happening rain or shine, but I’m asking for everyone to collectively demand no rain on Sunday so we can hang out in the backyard with you underneath the cherry tree.

PATCHWORK SKATEBOARD

Patchwork Skateboard

I am so excited to finally be able to check off #6 on My Crafty List of Things to Do – design a skateboard! I received my blank deck back in February and looked at it everyday, pondering just what I was going to do. I had the idea to make a piece of patchwork that I might somehow wrap around the deck. I also had triangles on my mind, inspired by the fabric bunting in the workroom’s window that I just can’t seem to bear to take down.

I decided to make use of the workroom’s laser cutter to help with all the cutting. I’ve been wanting to test this out to help doing patchwork. Every single fabric triangle was laser cut and they are all the exact same size. I knew this kind of precision would be really helpful, especially since I had it in my head that I was going to hand piece the entire thing.

Before attempting to put the real thing together. I did a little test piece. I made a small triangle patchwork sample that I tested wrapping and gluing around a piece of plywood. I had purchased a bottle of Martha Stewart’s Decoupage Glue a while ago, hoping it would do the trick. It worked perfectly. To adhere the patchwork to the wood, I applied the glue to the wood and smoothed the fabric on top. I then brushed on a layer of the glue over top the fabric. The two things I learned from doing this test were 1. the wood showed through the muslin pieces more than I liked once it was glued and 2. one layer of glue on top of the fabric was enough. More than that and the fabric started looking dull and plastic-y. To compensate for the show-through on the muslin, I decided to glue a solid piece of muslin to the skateboard deck first and then glue my patchwork on top of that.

Of course all this was started about a week before I needed to submit my finished deck. Even being short on time, I was absolutely determined to sew the entire thing by hand. After doing our Hand Work class, I love having a hand sewing project on the go. Sitting in bed and sewing is so fun! There were a couple late nights, but when I finished sewing all 200+ triangles together, I was so happy with how it turned out.

When I had finished gluing the finished patchwork to the deck, I realized that the back of the deck wasn’t so pretty. I couldn’t have that, so I found a large scrap of Liberty of London ‘Wiltshire’ (from this dress), glued it over the back and then hand embroidered a little label.

The actual auction night was super fun. Tons of people came out to see all the artwork and finished decks. All the decks were so different and lots of them were really clever. Even though Andrew bid on my deck a couple times (so sweet!), by the end of the night someone else had outbid him, so it’s gone to another home. I couldn’t resist bidding on Derrick Hodgson’s deck and I actually won it! I haven’t picked it up yet, but I’m currently trying to decide where it’s going to hang.

All my photos of my work in progress and the Disposable Artshow night are here. Thanks to Freedom Fighter Skateboards and Joey for letting me take part. I’ll admit that I’m already hatching ideas for another deck for next year’s event. Why stop at just one?

DISPOSABLE ARTSHOW

My skateboard is done and it turned out really well! I’m going to wait until after the auction on Saturday to post photos of it. I used the laser cutter to cut out over 200 fabric triangles that I hand stitched together. For real. It was kinda crazy.

I dropped the finished piece off at the gallery on Monday and got a sneak peek at some of the other decks. It’s going to be a great show, just look at some of the names on the roster. You can actually drop by 52 McCaul anytime now to see the show. I believe it will be up until this Sunday. The auction and opening party will be held Saturday night, if you’re looking for something fun to do!

April 16, 2010 of 365 : my new kitty made by stitch face

I had been planning for weeks to buy myself a new bunny from Stitch Face at the Spring Trunk Show. Somehow this little cute kitty stuck out in the crowd and ended up coming home with me. I just couldn’t resist the grey plaid and crochet scarf. Her name is ‘Bunny’, so it actually works out!

SPRING TRUNK SHOW

Beside Herself

I worried all week that the weather would be terrible on Sunday for the Spring Trunk Show, but it turned out to be a lovely, sunny day! It was a really fun show with handful of great new vendors – Stitch Face, Beside Herself, Deadweight, Argyle Acorn, and Repeat Studio.

Over the last month, I’ve been laser cutting with Chris, so I was excited to see his finished birdhouses and letterbox. They turned out so beautifully.

I always go home with a few treats for myself. Melinda sweetly gave me a copy of her new print. She designed it especially for the trunk show and is perfect for anyone who loves sewing. It will be framed and hung up somewhere special in the shop. Melinda also made homemade marshmallows and oreo cookies that were so delicious.

It was great to see everyone out on the weekend. Yay Spring!

March 30, 2010 of 365 : becky’s feet + crochet triangles in progress

Becky is always cooking up something super crafty. Her current project is currently installed in the window of the Knit Cafe. Colourfully crochet triangles that have been stitched together. Becky dropped by to lay all her triangles out on our large cutting table before sewing them together. I snapped a few photos of her taking photos of her project in progress.
